New York's holiday lights are spread across about three miles of Midtown plus one Brooklyn neighborhood. Seeing them well is entirely a matter of routing and timing.
Here is each display, what makes it worth the stop, and when to actually show up.
The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree
Roughly 75 feet of Norway spruce under 50,000 lights and a Swarovski star. It is lit from early December through early January, generally from the morning until midnight.
- Best time: after 9:00 PM on a weeknight, or before 8:00 AM if you want photos with nobody in them.
- Worst time: weekend evenings between 5:00 and 8:00 PM.
- Best angle: from the Channel Gardens off Fifth Avenue, with the rink below.
The ceremony night is the single most crowded evening of the season and you will see almost nothing. Come any other night.
Fifth Avenue Windows and the Saks Light Show
The department store windows are a genuine New York tradition, and the whole stretch is walkable in about an hour.
- Saks Fifth Avenue — the facade light show runs on a loop every ten minutes after dark.
- Bergdorf Goodman at 58th — the most artistic windows in the city.
- Bloomingdale's on Lexington and Macy's at Herald Square for the classics.
- The Louis Vuitton flagship, wrapped as a monogrammed trunk.
Holiday Markets and Rinks
- Bryant Park Winter Village — the largest market, free rink, open late.
- Union Square Holiday Market — the best for actual gifts from local makers.
- Columbus Circle Market — smallest and calmest, good on a Central Park day.
- Wollman Rink in Central Park — the skate with the skyline behind it.
Dyker Heights, Brooklyn
A residential neighborhood where homeowners spend the year — and serious money — competing over Christmas displays. Nothing in Manhattan matches the scale of it.
- Core blocks: 11th to 13th Avenues, 83rd to 86th Streets.
- Best time: 7:00 to 9:00 PM, weeknights.
- Getting there: about an hour from Midtown by subway, or take a guided bus or private SUV tour and skip the logistics.
Seeing the Lit City From Above
- Top of the Rock — the only deck with the Empire State Building in your photo.
- Summit One Vanderbilt — mirrored rooms and glass ledges, best just before sunset.
- The Edge at Hudson Yards — outdoor open-air ledge, dramatic and cold.
- Empire State Building — the classic, busiest of the four.
In December the sun sets around 4:30 PM, so a 4:00 PM ticket gets you daylight, sunset and the fully lit city in one visit.
