December in New York usually runs between 30 and 45 degrees Fahrenheit, with wind funneling down the avenues that makes it feel colder. You will also walk more than you expect — most of my travelers log 15,000 to 20,000 steps a day.
Pack for warmth you can remove indoors, and for feet that have to survive four days of pavement.
The Layering System That Actually Works
- A thin thermal or merino base layer — the single highest-value item you can pack.
- A sweater or fleece mid-layer.
- A wind-resistant insulated coat, ideally hitting mid-thigh.
- A scarf, gloves and a hat. Wind, not temperature, is what makes you miserable here.
Restaurants, theaters and the subway are heated aggressively. You need to be able to shed two layers in thirty seconds and carry them.
Footwear — Get This Right or Nothing Else Matters
- One pair of broken-in waterproof walking boots with real tread.
- A second pair of comfortable shoes so you can alternate days.
- Wool socks, more pairs than you think.
- Skip new shoes, thin-soled flats and anything with a heel over two inches — the sidewalks are uneven and often wet.
Evenings, Broadway and Nicer Dinners
New York is not formal, but the holidays are the one time people dress. Bring one smart outfit you feel wonderful in — dark jeans or trousers with a nice top and a blazer is enough for almost any restaurant or theater.
- One dressier outfit for a show or a rooftop dinner.
- A compact clutch or small bag — most theaters restrict bag size.
- Dress shoes you can walk two blocks in, because you will.
The Small Things Travelers Forget
- A portable phone battery — cold drains batteries and you will photograph everything.
- A crossbody bag that zips, worn in front in crowds.
- Lip balm and hand cream; the wind is dry.
- A foldable tote for shopping.
- Printed or offline copies of tickets in case service drops underground.

- An umbrella that cannot handle wind — it will invert and die on Sixth Avenue.
